The borrowed authority

The name of a well-known company placed in the story, without the working relationship ever being specified. The brand lends its reputation; the post keeps the benefit.

In one sentence

If the company's name is more precise than the role held there, the name is doing the work, not the experience.

01 · If you use it

What holds, and what does not

The technique itself is neutral. What changes is the gap between what the line promises and what the post delivers.

Defensible

Name your role before naming the company: "project manager at X" informs, "at X" decorates.

Specify the status and duration when citing an experience: that is what makes it verifiable.

Tell what you did there rather than what the brand evokes: the precise anecdote is worth more than the logo.

To avoid

Do not let a preposition ("at", "with", "for") suggest a closer link than the real one.

Do not turn a one-off client into a permanent credential without stating the nature of the engagement.

Do not cite a company where you could not precisely describe what you accomplished.

02 · How to recognise it

Three markers

01

The name is famous, the role is not

The brand is spelled out in full, sometimes with its logo. The position held, the duration, the team: none of it is given.

02

The link is worded vaguely

"At", "with", "for", "alongside": prepositions that cover a ten-year contract and a one-hour meeting equally well.

03

The name arrives before the point

It appears in the first lines, before the fold. The post does not tell the company's story: it leans on it, then moves on.

03 · Annotated examples

The same mechanism, three forms

UNDEFINED STINT

« After my time at a global consulting leader, I understood one thing. »

"Time at" says neither the status nor the duration. A three-week contractor engagement produces exactly the same sentence as a ten-year career.

Is the exact status (employee, contractor, guest) specified anywhere?
CLIENT TURNED CREDENTIAL

« I work with Fortune 500 teams on these topics. »

One workshop sold to a single subsidiary is enough to make the sentence accurate. The plural and the label do the rest of the work.

How many teams, in how many companies, on what engagement?
CONVERSATION PROMOTED TO CLOSENESS

« What the CEO of a major group confided to me last week. »

The confidence implies a closeness nothing establishes. The executive stays anonymous, hence unverifiable, and the prestige of the position rubs off on the author.

Would the person quoted recognize the exchange as reported?
04 · Why it works

The mechanism

In the feed, the reader has a few seconds and no means of verification. A well-known company name is the fastest piece of information to process: it carries, on its own, years of communication the author never had to produce.

Reputation works by contagion. A brand associated with rigor or success rubs off on whoever cites it, without the reader examining the nature of the link. The vagueness is not a flaw in the sentence: it is what allows the transfer to happen.

Famous names hold the eye and trigger reactions: recognition, curiosity, sometimes disagreement. These interactions improve the post's distribution, regardless of what the recounted experience actually contains.

05 · What to check

Four questions

A well-known brand cited without a working relationship.

Is the exact role stated anywhere?

Look for the position, the status, and the duration. If the post gives only the company name, the name is carrying the demonstration.

Could the anecdote happen anywhere else?

Replace the brand with an unknown small business. If the point still stands, the name was not serving the story; it was serving the author.

Is the link verifiable?

A real experience appears in the profile's detailed work history. Borrowed authority appears only in the posts, never in the history.

What does the rest of the post sell?

If the text ends on a coaching offer, the name cited in the opening was its endorsement.

Name what you did there, not only where.

Three whole posts a month, no credit card.
